A trailing stop is a stop loss that follows the price at a fixed distance while the trade moves in your favour, and stays where it is when the price moves against you. On a gold buy with a 15 dollar trail, every new high drags the stop up behind it; the first 15 dollar pullback from the peak closes the trade.

Many traders in the Gulf trade gold around a working day, and the busiest gold hours often fall when they cannot watch a screen. That is exactly the situation a trailing stop was built for. It is also the situation where a misunderstood trailing stop does the most damage, so this guide covers both the mechanics and the limits.

What is a trailing stop, in plain terms?

It is an ordinary stop loss with one extra rule: it only ratchets in one direction. The US investor education site of the SEC describes it as a stop whose price is set as a percentage or amount away from the market price, which adjusts as the price moves favourably and stays fixed when the price moves unfavourably. FINRA describes the same idea for a sell order: sell if the price declines a set amount from its level at the moment.

For a buy (long) trade, the stop sits below price and moves up. For a sell (short) trade, it sits above price and moves down. When it is touched, it behaves like any stop: it becomes an instruction to close at the next available price, not a promise of that exact price.

How does a trailing stop work in MetaTrader 5?

The MetaTrader 5 help pages explain a detail many traders miss. In MT5, the trailing stop is executed by the trading platform on your device, not on the broker's server. When new quotes arrive, the platform checks whether the position's profit in points has reached the trailing distance; once it has, it sends a command to place the stop loss at that distance from the current price, and it keeps moving it as profit grows.

The consequence.

If you close MT5 or your computer sleeps, trailing stops stop trailing. Only the last stop loss level the platform already sent to the server keeps protecting the trade. Some brokers offer server-side trailing on their own platforms, so check your broker's documentation rather than assuming.

Points, not dollars.

MT5 asks for the trailing distance in points. On a gold symbol quoted to two decimals, one point is 0.01, so a 15 dollar trail is 1,500 points. If your broker quotes gold to three decimals, the same 15 dollars is 15,000 points. Check the symbol's digits before typing a number.

Which price triggers it.

For a buy, the stop is checked against the Bid. The spread therefore matters: when spreads widen around news or the daily rollover, the Bid falls further than the mid-market price, so a tight stop can trigger on a spread spike alone.

A worked XAUUSD example: five ways to exit the same trade

All prices here are hypothetical and chosen to teach, not a forecast. Assume a broker contract of 100 ounces per lot, which is common but not universal, so 0.10 lot is 10 ounces and every 1 dollar move is worth 10 dollars.

You buy 0.10 lot of gold at 4,130 with a starting stop at 4,115, risking 15 dollars per ounce, or 150 dollars. Price then travels this path: dips to 4,124, rises to 4,160, pulls back to 4,149, rallies to 4,185, and finally falls to 4,140.

Exit methodWhere the trade closesResult on 0.10 lot, before spread and costs
Fixed stop at 4,115, no targetStill open at 4,140+100 unrealised, which can still become -150
Fixed take-profit at 4,1754,175+450
Trailing stop, 6 dollars4,154 on the pullback+240
Trailing stop, 15 dollars4,170 after the peak+400
Trailing stop, 30 dollars4,155 after the peak+250

Walk through the 15 dollar trail. MT5 starts trailing once profit reaches 15 dollars, at 4,145, and sets the stop at 4,130. At 4,160 the stop is 4,145. The pullback to 4,149 does not reach it. At 4,185 the stop is 4,170, and the final fall closes the trade there.

The 6 dollar trail is too tight for this path: the ordinary pullback to 4,149 hits its 4,154 stop and the trade misses the rally. The 30 dollar trail survives everything but gives back 30 dollars from the peak.

The honest part.

In this path a plain take-profit at 4,175 beat every trailing stop. A trailing stop is not a better exit; it is a different bet. It pays when a move runs further than you expected and costs you when the market reverses near a level you could have targeted. Over many trades, which one suits you depends on how your own setups behave, which only your trading journal can tell you.

How far should the trailing distance be?

Set the distance from the market's normal noise, not from how much profit you want to protect. A practical method is to use a multiple of the Average True Range. If gold's 14 period ATR on your chosen timeframe were 10 dollars, a 1.5 times ATR trail would be 15 dollars, wide enough to survive one ordinary swing. Our guide to using ATR to place a gold stop loss explains the calculation step by step.

Two rules keep the distance honest:

  1. The trail should be at least as wide as your initial stop logic allows. If a 15 dollar stop was right at entry, a 6 dollar trail is probably asking to be stopped by noise.
  2. Position size follows the stop, never the reverse. A wider trail with the same account risk means a smaller position, as our stop loss guide shows with numbers.

When can a trailing stop fail you?

Gaps.

Gold closes for the weekend and can open on Monday some distance away. A stop that sits inside the gap is filled at the first available price, which can be far worse than the stop level. The same happens on sharp data releases. Our explainer on slippage covers why.

Platform off.

On MT5, a closed terminal means no trailing, as described above. If you rely on trailing during work hours, either keep the platform running on a stable machine or use a broker that trails on the server.

Spread spikes.

Because a long is closed on the Bid, a brief spread spike can trigger a tight trail without any real move. Tight trails and illiquid hours are a poor combination.

Trailing stop vs take-profit: which should you use?

They answer different questions. A take-profit order says you know where the move should end. A trailing stop says you do not know, and you will let the market tell you. Many traders combine them: a fixed stop at entry, a partial take-profit at the first target, and a trail on the remainder. Whatever you choose, decide it before entry and write it in your plan, because moving exits mid-trade is one of the most common ways disciplined plans fall apart.
