To calculate the gold price per gram, divide the price of one troy ounce by 31.1035, then multiply by the purity of the karat you are pricing. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the ounce price on a trading screen and the gram price in a Gulf gold souk are the same number seen through a conversion.

Across the GCC, gold is quoted two ways at once. Trading platforms and financial news quote spot gold in US dollars per troy ounce (XAU/USD). Jewellers in Dubai, Doha, Kuwait City or Muscat quote local currency per gram, usually by karat. If you know how to calculate the gold price per gram yourself, you can check any board, understand why a shop price is higher, and see how much a move on the chart really means for a bracelet or a small bar.

How do you calculate the gold price per gram from the ounce price?

Use three steps. The method works for any currency and any karat.

  1. Ounce to gram. Divide the US dollar price per troy ounce by 31.1035. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) gives the troy ounce as 31.10348 grams; 31.1035 is the same figure rounded.
  2. Pure gold to karat. Multiply by the gold content of the karat: 24K is 24 parts of 24, 22K is 22 of 24, and so on.
  3. Dollars to local currency. Multiply by the exchange rate. The UAE dirham is pegged at 3.6725 per US dollar, the rate the Central Bank of the UAE publishes.

The full formula is: gram price = (ounce price ÷ 31.1035) × purity × exchange rate.

Why not 28.35?

A common mistake is dividing by 28.35, the grams in an ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce used for food and postage. Precious metals are priced in troy ounces, which are about 10% heavier. Using 28.35 makes every gram look roughly 10% more expensive than it is.

What does a worked example look like?

Assume, purely for illustration, that spot gold is quoted at $4,000 per troy ounce. This is not a forecast or a current price; replace it with the live quote when you do your own sum.

  • $4,000 ÷ 31.1035 = $128.60 per gram of pure gold
  • $128.60 × 3.6725 = AED 472.29 per gram of pure gold

Now apply purity. Gold purity is also written as fineness in parts per thousand, which is what a hallmark stamp shows:

KaratGold contentCommon fineness markUSD per gramAED per gram
24K24 of 24999128.47471.82
22K22 of 24916117.80432.62
21K21 of 24875112.53413.26
18K18 of 2475096.45354.22

The 24K row uses 999 fineness. Some investment bars are 999.9, which adds about 0.1% to the metal value. The 21K row matters in the Gulf, because 21K is widely sold in the region even though it is not on the UK Assay Office's list of convention fineness marks.

Scaling up.

A 10 gram 21K bracelet contains metal worth 10 × AED 413.26 = AED 4,132.60 at our hypothetical price. A 1 kilogram bar of pure gold is 32.15 troy ounces, which is why kilo bars move by thousands of dollars on an ordinary trading day.

Why is the shop price higher than your calculation?

Your result is the value of the metal at the spot price. A retail price adds costs that a spot quote does not include:

  • Making charges. Jewellery carries a fee for design and labour, usually quoted per gram or per piece. In our example, a making charge of AED 25 per gram adds AED 250 to the AED 4,132.60 bracelet, about 6% on top of the metal value.
  • Dealer premium. Bars and coins sell above spot to cover refining, minting, shipping and the dealer's margin. Small bars usually carry a higher premium per gram than large ones.
  • Buy and sell prices. Like any market, a dealer quotes one price to sell to you and a lower one to buy back. Ask for both before you buy.
  • Taxes. Tax treatment of gold differs by GCC country and by product type. Ask the seller how tax is applied to the specific item and keep the invoice.
  • Timing. A board may update every few minutes while spot moves second by second.
The honest point.

Jewellery is a purchase with a resale value, not a low-cost way to own gold. When you sell, making charges are usually not refunded, so a piece bought with a 6% making charge has to see the gold price rise by more than that before you break even on the metal alone. Our guide on how to invest in gold across the GCC compares the routes in more detail.

How much does a move in the ounce price change the gram price?

Divide the move by 31.1035 and convert. At our hypothetical $4,000, a 1% move in spot ($40) changes the pure gold gram price by about $1.29, or AED 4.72. For 21K gold the change is 87.5% of that, about AED 4.13 per gram.

This also shows why traders talk in ounces and buyers in grams. A $40 move sounds dramatic on a chart, yet it changes a 10 gram 21K bracelet's metal value by about AED 41. The same $40 move is far larger for a trader holding a 100 ounce position, which is why position size, covered in our guide on gold lot size and risk per trade, matters more than the headline price.

Which price should you start from?

Start from a live spot quote and note what it represents:

  • Spot XAU/USD on a trading platform. A dealer quote with a bid and an ask; the gap between them is the spread. Use the mid-price for a fair estimate.
  • The LBMA Gold Price. A benchmark price set through an electronic auction administered independently by ICE Benchmark Administration and published at set times. Many contracts settle against it, but it is not a live price between auctions.
  • A futures price. Exchange-traded gold futures usually sit slightly above spot because of financing costs, so do not mix the two in one calculation.

Gold is priced in US dollars, so a change in the dollar itself can move gold. Our explainer on what the DXY is covers that relationship. Because the dirham is pegged to the dollar, an AED buyer feels the dollar gold price almost one for one.

Where does TIC fit in?

The free TIC app shows live market data and charts, including spot gold, which gives you the ounce price to plug into the formula. TIC's own trading results are independently verified on Myfxbook and published on our results page, which is the kind of evidence to ask any provider for. None of that changes the arithmetic above: whether you buy a bracelet or trade the chart, know the gram value of the metal, the costs on top, and how much you can afford to see move against you.
