Gold closed at $3,995.87 on Friday, October 24. That is the first weekly close below $4,000 since the cycle turned, down 0.81 percent on the day and roughly 4.7 percent below the October 9 high near $4,194. Two days from now the Federal Reserve decides rates. November is not a normal month.

The pullback has a clear cause: US inflation came in hot (3.7 percent year over year in September, with a 0.6 percent monthly rise), the Fed already hiked once this cycle (September 16, to 3.75 to 4.00 percent), and the rate-futures market revived the idea of more tightening. When rates rise, gold pays no interest and gets sold. That is the whole story of the last three weeks.

November is where the story gets decided. Three scheduled events sit inside the first ten days of the month, and together they will either confirm the hawkish turn or break it. This article walks through each one, what the data says today, and a practical framework for the month, without pretending anyone knows the outcome.

Event one: the FOMC decision, October 28

The Fed meets October 27 to 28, with the decision at 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday. Prediction markets price roughly a 94 percent chance the Fed holds at 3.75 to 4.00 percent, with a second hike as the tail risk near 40 percent by some broker counts, though the priced base case is still a hold.

The September jobs report, just 29,000 new payrolls, is the main reason a second hike stayed unlikely: a central bank does not typically stack hikes onto a stalling labor market. But the hot CPI print keeps the hawkish camp armed, and that tension is what gold is pricing right now.

The scenarios are simple to state. A hold with hawkish guidance keeps the dollar bid and gold pinned under $4,000, with room to test the $3,930 area, the level that held the late-September dip. A hold with softer language, acknowledging the labor slowdown, takes pressure off long yields, and gold reclaims $4,100 with a path toward the mid-October highs. The hike scenario, the tail, would be a genuine shock: watch for a fast test of the $3,800s, the level that has never been threatened this cycle.

Event two: the US midterm elections, November 3

One week later, American voters elect all 435 House members, 35 senators, and 39 governors. For markets this is a volatility event more than a direction event. History says the week around midterms brings poll-driven swings in the dollar, and a surprise result in either direction moves yields.

For gold, the honest read is that elections matter mainly through the dollar. A result markets read as fiscal restraint can lift the dollar and pressure gold, temporarily. A result read as more spending keeps the deficit theme alive, and the deficit theme is one of the structural pillars under this gold cycle. Either way, the election is a three-day volatility window, not a trend change.

Event three: jobs and inflation data, November 6 and 10

The October jobs report lands November 6 and the October CPI lands November 10. These are the first hard numbers after the Fed decision, and they decide what December looks like.

September gave the market a near-stall in hiring (29,000 payrolls) and hot inflation (3.7 percent). If October repeats that mix, the Fed's dilemma sharpens: inflation above target with a weakening labor market is the hardest combination to tighten into, and gold historically likes that dilemma. If instead payrolls rebound and inflation cools, the hawkish path reopens and the recent pressure on gold extends.

What the positioning says (as of the CFTC report of October 20)

Big speculators remain heavily long gold but are cutting: 86 percent of contracts long, a net position of +199,865, and the largest weekly trim of this stretch at -8,014. Since September 22, longs have come down 6.6 percent while shorts grew 32.5 percent from a small base. The crowd is still in the trade, but conviction is being tested at the margin. Stretched positioning in either direction raises the odds of sharp moves when the event risk lands.

The structural floor has not moved

None of this touches the reason the floor near $4,000 keeps holding. Central banks have averaged over 1,000 tonnes of gold purchases per year across the last four years, per World Gold Council data, with 244 tonnes in Q1 2026 and a sharp rebound to 289 tonnes in Q2. The debt and deficit picture in the US has not improved. When the hawkish data runs fade, these are the drivers that reassert, and major desks still price gold above spot on a 6 to 12 month view: Citi at $4,800 near-term and $5,000 on a 6 to 12 month view, Goldman at $4,900 by end-2026, JPMorgan flagging a retest of $5,000.

The dispersion matters as much as the levels. A wide spread between the most cautious and the most bullish desks says there is no consensus on the other side of October. No-consensus regimes are where disciplined process beats prediction.

A practical framework for November

  1. Treat October 27-28 as a stand-aside window for new gold entries. The cheapest trade is often the one not taken into a binary event.
  2. Let the FOMC statement, not the press conference headline, set your November bias. Language on the labor market is the tell.
  3. Size positions for a $3,930 to $4,200 range until data says otherwise. Both edges of that range have been respected this month.
  4. If the midterm week produces a dollar spike, treat it as a timing gift, not a trend. Election-driven dollar moves have historically mean-reverted within days.
  5. Watch the November 10 CPI as the month's tiebreaker. It is the last major print before the December meeting conversation becomes real.

How TIC fits into this

TIC publishes every closed trade idea, wins and losses included, and the live Track Record is public. The TIC app covers this exact workflow: Academy for the fundamentals, Paper Trade to test the November framework with virtual money, and live trade ideas with entry, stop loss and targets on Pro or Elite. That is the discipline layer this kind of month demands, because November 2026 is a month where process will outperform opinion.
